Nikkor Wide Angle Lens Review

“Expensive but look what it does”

nikon nikkor 14-24

$1550 for a lens with a 10mm range?

Yes, and worth it.

First, if you use this on a combination of FX and DX bodies, you have a range of 14 to 36 mm. You cover every wide angle prime — 14mm, 18mm, 20mm, 24mm, 28mm, 35mm, in one package. Not bad. Add the fact that the ISO 6400 on the FX Nikon bodies is fantastic and there’s no need for 1.4 or 2.0 max apertures, you got a very versatile package in this lens.

But even if you couldn’t get 14-36 coverage, this lens would be worth the dough because it is so sharp. The first time I opened a group shot done with this lens I was blown away by the detail and sharpness. I have never seen this kind of quality out of a Nikon lens, and I own a lot of them. It is great. Colors are saturated, flare well controlled and the lens handles very nicely. I’ve used it in low light and the 2.8 shots are as good as the f/8 shots. A fantastic lens; wish I had the money to buy its cousin, the 24-70, but I have to content with the 28-70 for now.

If you can afford only one Nikon wide angle lens, make it this one.

Nikon 14-24 Lens Review

Almost perfection

nikon nikkor 14-24

This is easily the best wide angle lens on the planet. Ultra Sharp, ultra fast, and pro quality build. Colors are wonderful with great contrast. Focus is quick and silent.
The only thing keeping this lens from getting five stars is that you have to realize its limits. Those limits, in my humble opinion, are that it tends to flair very easily. Once you realize what angles are usable to shoot during the day, then you can eliminate most of the flair issue. It would help if the lens were able to accept filters, but it doesn’t so you will have to live with the flair issues. Also, the build quality isn’t what you will be use to if you’ve handle the previous generations of the PRO grade Nikon glass. It does not have the heavy solid feel one might expect. The crinkle finish is also missing. The rings also doesn’t feel very well damped. Its still very well built, make no mistake, just not what you’d expect if you have experience with the 70-200 f/2.8 VR or the “Beast” 28-70 f/2.8
These are the few gripes I have about this lens. Image quality wise, there isn’t anything to complain about. It’s about as close to perfection as we will see for a while when it comes to Wide Angle Lenses.

Nikon 14-24mm Lens Review

Heavy, yes; expensive, yes; worth it, yes!

nikon nikkor 14-24

I have been fortunate to use Leica SLR cameras and lenses for many years. Thus, my yardstick for any other lens is very high. I also own and shoot a Nikon D-200 and D-300. In particular, lens resolution, light fall off at the edges, and color saturation are very important to me. This lens is superlative in all these important respects. It is heavy, bulbous and expensive. However, I believe that the pro-sumer market is moving towards full 35mm size sensors so this lens is an investment in the future although it works extremely well on DX sensor bodies > D-40. One negative, it cannot accomodate filters, in particular, the all important circular polarizer. In my opinion, software can do remarkable things for color etc. but glare is best removed with a polarizer. If you can live with this deficiency, as I must, the lens is highly recommended.

Nikon 14-24 f2.8 Review

Nikon 14-24 f2.8 Review

“An excellent product for the professional”

nikon nikkor 14-24

I am impressed with the lack of distortion and flare in such a fast and complex lens. Color correction and fidelity are exceptional and the build quality seems fine. Sharpness is not quite what I expected, but far better than with many other new lenses I have tried recently. My only criticism would be for the design of the plastic lens cap that is only held on by friction. It falls off easily and this will probably get worse with time – a poor solution for a high price lens.
